As less of a competitive player, Ryan tries to work out all the details of what a companion metagame will look like with the help of our resident Johnny/Spike player Kevin. Tuesday Apr 28, 2020
Tuesday Apr 28, 2020
Companions seem to have taken Pioneer by storm, just as they have done in almost every other Magic the Gathering format. In today's episode we take a look at recent Pioneer MTGO results and discuss just how much of an impact Companions have had on it. Will Companions stick around for long or will they be a 'flash in the pan'? Which companions can you expect to see in Pioneer from now on? How can you beat them? All this and more in this week's episode!

Monday Apr 20, 2020
Monday Apr 20, 2020
With Ikoria still fresh off the presses and most events unlikely to explore the format in depth for weeks to come, the time is ripe to brew to your heart’s content in Pioneer. In today’s show we explore early brews people are playing with on Magic Online and also share some ideas we had for our own. Now seems like a great time to brew and have some fun playing Pioneer. How will YOU attack the metagame this season? Be sure to share your deck ideas with us after listening!

Monday Apr 13, 2020
Out of all of the beasts and baddies of Ikoria, which will make the cut in Pioneer? Join “The Pioneers” and special guest Jonathan Medina as we peer over the reinforced walls of human resistance in Ikoria and decide which creatures are our foe and which are our friends in the Pioneer format.

#16: Pioneer on MTG Arena
Monday Apr 06, 2020
Monday Apr 06, 2020
A few weeks back the MTG Arena team let slip that they were working on releasing Amonkhet block, as well as a Pioneer Masters set for the free to play online Magic the Gathering software. Both of these announcements bring us one step closer to being able to play Pioneer any time and anywhere with an internet connection. In today’s topic we discuss how the current Historic format will slowly morph into Pioneer lite with the new sets, as well as which cards need to be included in Pioneer Masters to make Arena the closest thing to Pioneer online for the masses.

#15: Here comes A New Challenger (deck)!
Monday Mar 23, 2020
Monday Mar 23, 2020
Wizards of the Coast has been releasing challenger decks for years and while there have been more misses than hits, they’ve been doing a lot better as of late. Back when we were a Frontier podcast we had fun making our own starter/challenger decks for people getting into that format, but now that the Pioneer metagame has started to solidify we thought it would be good to revisit this topic. Prices are starting to go up on some cards and players getting into the format need to have a good jumping off point to get them started. Challenger decks seem like a great way to deal with both problems. In today’s episode Kevin and I pick 6 of the strongest decks in Pioneer and discuss how we’d make a cheap challenger deck for new players as well as a budget deck that’s a bit more expensive but also more powerful.

#14: The Planes of Pioneer - Zendikar (First Live Show)
Monday Mar 16, 2020
Monday Mar 16, 2020
Luckily the Eldrazi never took over Pioneer like they did in the other eternal formats, but the same can't be said for Zendikar. In today's episode we continue our series about the Planes of Pioneer and discuss how each one fits into the format. Zendikar brought us a lot of interesting cards that form up the backbone of many decks. Its cards also helped to fill in gaps of others where they were lacking. While most if not all of the Plane's mechanics were utter failures, the block itself still has a lot of potential in Pioneer. Join us as we explore the verdant lands of Zendikar!
Thank you for joining us during our first live show! Did you miss it? No worries, there will be more. Be sure to join the Discord so join our next live podcast!

#13 - Right foot Forward
Tuesday Mar 10, 2020
Tuesday Mar 10, 2020
When Wizards first announced there was going to be a post-modern format, Kevin and I were still doing a Frontier podcast. Having played that casual format for so long, we felt we had a pretty good handle on what Wizards of the Coast needed to do in order to start this new format off on the right foot. In this episode we look back on our advice to see if Wizards of the Coast has followed any of our suggestions and if so how this decision affected Pioneer. We also discuss Pioneer’s current health heading into the last stretch of the season as well as what Wizards can do to further improve the format.

#12 - The Road Ahead
Monday Mar 02, 2020
Monday Mar 02, 2020
With plenty of results to look at, Kevin and Ryan believe that the Pioneer metagame is starting to settle. But where do we go from here? In this episode we discuss what we think the rest of the season will look like, talk about what we think the best decks of the format are, and also which cards are currently format all stars.

#11: Brew Ha Ha
Monday Feb 24, 2020
Monday Feb 24, 2020
Taking a break from the Pioneer grind and metagame, Kevin and Ryan spend this episode nerding out about cards we'd love to brew around in the format. If you're a lover of jank and unloved cards, this episode is for you. We talk about how we'd build a deck around our favorite "pet" cards, how that deck would try and win the game, and also what these decks would need in the future to become viable as a competitive deck.
